In February 2009, Pühajärve Spa Hotel won the first prize in the “Green Key Annual Awards 2009” competition for accommodation establishments. Our prize-winning project was called “Vali mahetoit- hea loodusele, hea Sinule!” (“Choose organic food – good for the nature, good for you!”).

Our goal is to popularise organic food among our customers and employees, but also among the locals living in Otepää and the tourists visiting the area. We co-operate with organic farmers, offer a selection of Estonian organic food and organic products, and encourage people to be more conscious consumers.

Organic ingredients are produced with full respect for the natural environment and the well-being of animals. The production process itself is very environmentally friendly and promotes both biological variety as well as the scenic diversity of the landscape. No artificial chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used in plants and the use of excess amounts of medicine and chemicals is avoided in livestock farming. By consuming organic products originating from Estonia, we also support local farmers and, what is more, we wish to prove that contrary to popular belief it is, indeed, possible to offer organic food and organic products also at a major accommodation establishment. This is the next logical step in the way we have managed our business so far, that is, by following the principles of environmentalism and sustainable management.

A wide selection of ecological products is available on our breakfast menu: yoghurt with kama (a mixture of ground rye, wheat, barley and pea); creamy curd with herbs; cheese, honey, herbal tea, apples, boiled eggs, porridge, rolls, dark rye bread, fine rye bread and sea-buckthorn jam. The organic products carry the “ÖKO” label shown below, which is used in Estonia to designate ecologically pure products:

People who consume ecological products get to enjoy healthy, environmentally friendly, reliable, delicious and GMO-free products; in other words, the eco-label guarantees the high quality of the food.

Pure holidays!
